Days after an ebola patient was identified in Kampala with
the Sudan strain of Ebola fever, Uganda
has begun testing a world-first vaccine for
that strain of the haemorrhagic fever. The
origin of the outbreak remains unknown
but two of the patient’s relatives
have since tested positive. The trial is
targeting health workers and others who
have been exposed. The World Health
Organisation’s Africa director, Matshidiso
Moeti, said the trial, which was prepared in
just four days – “demonstrates the power
of collaboration for global health security”.
The minister of health Uganda has also assured the world that they are trying their level best to contain the disease. She urges the public to remain calm. “Uganda is safe for everyone and there should be no need to worry” said the minister of health Dr Ruth Aceng.
