Tanzania decisively implemented a ban on the use of foreign currency for domestic transactions. Effective July 1, 2024, all transactions within the country were to be conducted exclusively in Tanzanian Shillings. This prohibition ensures that currencies such as the US Dollar and Euro cannot be used for local purchases. The primary intent of this significant change is to fortify the Tanzanian Shilling and stabilize the economy.

Key points regarding the foreign currency ban in Tanzania:

Legal Basis: This ban is enforced through amendments to Section 26(2) of the Bank of Tanzania Act, which explicitly prohibits the use of foreign currencies for any domestic transactions.

Goal: The principal objective is to firmly establish the Tanzanian Shilling as the sole legal tender in the nation and to uphold stability within the monetary system.

Implementation Date: The ban took effect on July 1, 2024, and compliance is mandatory.
